The photo was made public just five years after the attacks, and at that time many people believed that the people in the image were insensitive to the tragedy that occurred.
However the picture stirs controversy even now, because it is not clear if the people knew what was happening or not.
Thomas Hoepker, who took the photo, told CNN how he tookthe picture. The photographer said that all those five people in the picture seemed quiet and relaxed

“Thomas did not ask for permission to photograph us and has made no effort to find out our state of mind,” said Walter Sipser, the man on the right side of the picture.
One of the women in the photo said “it was genetically impossible not to be affected by this event.”
The photographer said he was sure that the people in the photo were aware of what was happening behind them. According to Thomas Hoepker, if he had asked permission to take the photo then it would not have been real.
