Italian motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli lost his life due to chest, head and neck injuries after crashing and being struck by two other riders during the Malaysian MotoGP race in Sepang on Sunday Oct, 23 2011 (scroll down for video of incident).

Rescuers rush towards Marco Simoncelli after crash at Malaysia MotoGP

Following the tragic accident, Simoncelli was rushed to the medical room at the Sepang circuit where he passed away of chest, head and neck injuries, officials said.

“The racer was already unconscious when the rescue team arrived at the crash spot,” MotoGP medical director Michele Macchiagodena said in a statement. “We tried to revive him but failed. Simoncelli died 45 minutes later.”

Malaysian moto-race, the 2nd to last of the season, was annulled.

World champion Casey Stoner said: “The seriousness of the incident was revealed by the video images. When a helmet comes off that’s a quite bad sign.”
