Video quarterfinals: Federer and Djokovic escape Roland Garros defeats
The Serb won after a great battle and survived four match points against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-1.
With a 5-5 tie in between duels (Djokovic won the only gravel lot, this year in Rome) was not really a favorite, just for the French fans on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The French fans on Court Philippe Chatrier fell silent when Djokovic claimed the first set just after twenty minutes. But the packed Philippe Chatrier almost exploded when their favorite Tsonga grabbed the second set and even took a 2-1 lead in sets after a break in the twelfth game.
“Tsonga has long been the best”, Djokovic said.
Also in the fourth set Tsonga was the best in the game. Djokovic sent him from net to wall, but the French athlete hit everything back and did it more than once with unbelievable passing shots or hard forehands.
Tsonga had two match points at 5-4 in the fourth set as a logical consequence of his ‘field dominance’ but an experienced Djokovic prevailed the end. Unbelievable Tsonga missed two other matchpoints at 6-5 in his favor and the very lucky Serbian leveled at 6-6 and then won the tiebreaker, much to the disappointment of the Frenchman.
The last set was easily claimed by Djokovic (6-1) who survived one of the toughest matches of his career.
“A huge blow, indeed. Also I no longer felt my legs in the fifth set” said Tsonga. On the other side Djokovic said: “Jo was for very long time the best, I was probably fitter.”
Federer in the last four!
Djokovic is gonna meet now Roger Federer. The Swiss came a long way to defeast Juan Martin Del Potro, but the Argentine suffered from his left knee injury which made him concede after 5 sets: 6-3, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 0-6 , 3-6.

Federer won four times in straight sets over Del Potro this year, but the record Grand Slam winner (and Roland Garros winner in 2009) was in this quarterfinal on the brink of being expelled without a setwin.
Del Potro had a hard retaliation with his strong forehand. Federer was forced backwards, did not vary and won only two of his five games. The powerlessness annoyed the Swiss, the usually stoic Federer even released his anger on a bottle.
Knee Problems hit Del Potro
After the “Shut Up” outburst, Federer was better in his game, though he still had not efficient defending solutions for the powerful tennis of the Argentine, who was going to experience medical troubles after winning the second set tiebreak.
Halfway through the third set there was hope for Federer, however that hope was granted by an injury of Del Potro. The Argentine could no longer deal with his wounded knees which forced him to slow the pace down. Federer won the third set easily, then claimed a 6-0 in the fourth and winning the decider set was never a trouble.
This is the 31th time seeing Federer on a grand slam tournament in the last four.
