MiniDuke Cyber Attack Hits Romania. Rival Nation Behind The Attack, Says Romanian Secret Service SRI
MiniDuke cyber attack which appears to have a greater impact than Red October in terms of technology, targeted the national security of Romania and was conducted by an organization that points to a rival country, revealed SRI in a statement.
“MiniDuke is completely new compared to Red October virus. It was developed by an entity which has the characteristics of a state actor. According to SRI assessments, this attack has a greater impact because of a higher technological level, which allows the malware to hide better and take deeper control over the compromised networks. The attack aimed at compromising Romania’s national security, and now our specialized teams take specific measures to identify all affected networks, minimize the consequences and stop the attack,” said Sava. Romanian IT teams claim that MiniDuke made use of a PDF format to spread the virus.

“Our experts have published a new research report that analyzes a number of security flaw incidents involving PDF exploits in Adobe Reader (CVE-2013-6040) and discovered recently a new malicious highly specialized program dubbed MiniDuke. SRI identified the activities of these hostile cyber entities that aimed of gaining access to national security networks before extracting confidential information. I am warning you, it was not about classified information, but confidential information,” said SRI spokesman Sorin Sava.
