“Unfortunately, the answer is no,” said Carter. “President Obama does not. But previous presidents have appealed to me and Carter Center to make decisions.”

Why not Barack Obama? “In all honesty, it’s hard to answer this question because it is too difficult,” he said. “I think the problem was that, to negotiate peace between Israel and Egypt , the Carter Center has taken a strong public position regarding equal treatment of Palestinians and Israelis. And I think this was a sensitive area in which the President did not wish to be involved.”
