TUI to shut down 140 travel agencies until end of March
The Dutch branch of TUI Group announces that the tour operator is set to close temporarily the doors of 140 offices in efforts to prevent as much as possible the spread of the novel coronavirus. The decision will come into effect tomorrow and will run until March 31. The travel agencies can be reached from 9 am to 5 pm at their own telephone number as well as via social media and the website.
Just like many other travel organizations, TUI has suspended a large part of the holiday trips scheduled for this month. All those vacations must be canceled or rebooked to a later date. Rebooking can also be done later with a so-called “corona voucher”.

TUI Nederland wrote on its website: “We understand very well that you may have a preference for a refund of the paid package travel. However, the circumstances are so exceptional that we have opted for an exceptional solution. The General Dutch Association of Travel Companies (ANVR) supports this solution. The “Stichting Garantiefonds Reisgelden” (SGR) guarantees the package travel voucher.”
The ANVR did not say how much damage the travel industry has suffered so far as a result of the corona virus epidemic. As far as is known, dozens of travel organizations have already filed for a reduction in working hours.
Airlines are also taking additional measures to deal with the coronavirus crisis. The number of passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has fallen sharply in recent days, partly as a result of the entry ban and the closure of airspace by numerous countries around the world. According to the airport, there were 38 percent fewer travelers last Friday and even 41 percent fewer travelers on Saturday.
