Olympic flame lands in Japan, no audience at torchlight procession
The Olympic flame has arrived in Japan from Greece. The plane with the torch on board landed on Friday at an air base in Matsushima, in the northeast of the country.
Olympic wrestling champion Saori Yoshida and Olympic judo champion Tadahiro Nomura took over the flame upon its arrival. The torch relay starts officially next week in Fukushima and will end on July 24 at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo during the opening ceremony of the 2020 Olympics.
The Olympic Committee of Japan has asked those interested to follow the torch relay via a live stream and not standing along the route.
Due to Covid-19 threats, the traditional opening ceremony took place in Greece last week without an audience. Only dignitaries and a number of journalists were present at the event. The journey of the Olympic flame through Greece was interrupted a day later due to fear of the coronavirus infections.
