The airplane, a Yakovlev Yak-42, smashed to the ground shortly after took off from Yaroslavl city in Central Russia. According to Russian news agencies, the aircraft was in flames before crashing near the banks of River Volga, about 2 kilometers from Tunosjno-airport’s runway (see photo Yak-42 crash site). The tragedy occured at 16:00hrs Moscow time (12:00 GMT).

It was reported that most of the people aboard were members of the ice hockey team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. They were en route to Minsk, Belarus.

Two persons were wounded in the incident and they are in critical medical condition.

Yaroslavl HC Lokomotiv claimed Russian Championships in 1997, 2002 and 2003. The team was scheduled to play against Mink HC Dinamo on Thursday in the opening game of the new season of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League KHL.

Top players and other stars: Lokomotiv Yaroslavl was a real force in Russian hockey and took 3rd place in KHL last year. The team was coached by Canadian Brad McCrimmon, who took over in May 2011. McCrimmon was an assistant trainer with the Detroit Red Wings, and had played 18 years in the NHL for Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Hartford.

Lokovotiv squad also featured famous European hockey players and former NHL stars, such as Slovakian forward and national team captain Pavol Demitra, who joined previously the NHL playing for St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks.

Besides Demitra the star list contains Czech forward Josef Vasicek, who played for the Islanders in the 2007-2008 season, Czech defender Karel Rachunek, who was on the Devils during the 2007-2008 season, Russian defender Ruslan Salei, who played for Anaheim Duck and then joined the Detroit Red Wings last season, another Russian defenseman Karlis Skrastins, who played for the Stars in 2010-2011 and Swedish goalkeeper Stefan Liv, who was transfered from the Red Wings in 2000.

Update: – A new assessment of local authorities disclosed that the charter plane was carrying 45 people, of which 44 died. “There were 45 people on board, 37 passengers and 8 crew members,” said local police sources.
